Some hikes stand out because of a difficult summit or an unexpected challenge. Others are memorable because nearly everything comes together: clear skies, calm water, comfortable afternoon temperatures and long stretches of trail with almost no one else around.
Our Saturday hike from Devil's Lake to Moraine Lake and Wickiup Plains was one of those days.
We began on the South Sister Climber Trail, followed it to the junction for Moraine Lake and then made a broad loop through the Three Sisters Wilderness. After visiting Moraine Lake, we climbed back to the climber trail, continued from the junction toward Wickiup Plains and returned on the loop that also connects with the Sisters Mirror Lake Trail. By the time we reached the car, we had traveled 12.3 miles with approximately 1,925 feet of elevation gain.

Summer crowds have thinned, but there is still plenty happening—from local theater and live dance to pumpkin patches, historic mysteries and Halloween traditions.
It is also a month when flexibility pays off. A sunny afternoon may be perfect for a walk along the Deschutes River, while the next day may call for an indoor performance or museum visit. Here are some of the best ways to enjoy Bend and the surrounding area in October 2026.

Fall is beginning to arrive in Central Oregon, and the September 2026 edition of Bend Premier Advisor brings together the latest Bend real estate market information with ideas for enjoying the season ahead.
This month, we take a closer look at the August 2026 Bend housing market, where the median sale price was $725,000 and nearly 45% of closed sales included a seller concession. With buyers having more negotiating opportunities, we also explore an increasingly important question: Is a seller-paid mortgage rate buydown more valuable than a price reduction?
Our September Community Spotlight takes us to Tetherow, one of west Bend's distinctive golf and lifestyle communities, known for contemporary high-desert architecture, resort amenities, trails and convenient access to the road to Mt. Bachelor.
And because living in Central Oregon is about much more than real estate, this month's Advisor also includes September home maintenance tips, a Maple-Dijon Pork Tenderloin with Apples recipe, and ideas for getting out and enjoying fall. We share our recent hike into Jefferson Park in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness, along with September festivals, farmers markets, music and other things to do around Central Oregon.

There are two ways to reach Golden Lake in Oregon's Three Sisters Wilderness. The route most hikers know begins at the Green Lakes Trailhead. It's spectacular, climbing steadily toward Green Lakes before crossing the divide into the secluded basin below Broken Top. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most sought-after trailheads in the Central Cascades permit system. Unless you reserve months in advance—or get lucky with a last-minute cancellation—there's a good chance you won't be hiking
